Autism spectrum disorder in children, is present right from the birth or early stage of development. It affects basic human behaviours like communication and social interaction, imagination, feelings, and establishing relationships with others. Autism education too has emerged as a major lacking area for children affected with the disorder.
The exact neurobiological mechanisms behind autism are yet to be established. But it’s clear that autism reflects the operation of factors involved in brain development. Autism is unique in its pattern regarding deficits and relative strengths. It usually has a lifelong effect on how children grow up as social beings, take care of themselves, and participate within the community.
Proper autism education planning should address the needs that are typically associated with the disorder, as well as the needs connected with the accompanying disabilities.
Autism education, both directly for the children, and the teachers and parents, is among the primary forms of treatment. Autism education was first accepted as public responsibility in India in the Education of All Handicapped Children Act (1975). The goals, despite the federal mandate, vary between states and school systems. A confluence of several factors in the last few years has caused courts in the country to become increasingly active to determine the methods and resources to be allocated by the school boards towards education of children with autism.
What has emerged as most important is the education to caregivers and teachers who will take care of the children and will impart the first teachings.
